As some of you may already know from my recent Twitter and Facebook posts, January is officially National Train Your Dog Month. Seeing that this is the month for new beginnings and making resolutions, make a promise to your dog to further his education. If you have a new puppy, resolve to start them off on the right paw. It’s never too early to teach them their basic manners. If you have a dog who already has the basics down, explore other realms of training such as Rally-O, Agility, Flyball, Search and Rescue, and working as a Therapy Dog. If you have a senior dog, well… forget that old saying that you can’t teach them new tricks. I say, “Phooey” to that!
Here’s my resolution for training Lucy (and not just for the month of January): one new trick a month and plenty of new games and enrichment toys. January will be “Bang Bang, You’re Dead” which we’ve been slowly cracking away at. I’ll post video of it after she’s got it down.
For more information on National Train Your Dog Month, check out this site from the Association of Pet Dog Trainers: http://www.trainyourdogmonth.com/. If you need a dog trainer in Brooklyn and Manhattan, get in touch with me. I’d be more than happy to keep you on track so that you have one less new year’s resolution to break.
Meanwhile, go train your dog!
